eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate)

An estimate of how well your kidneys filter the blood.

About this test

eGFR is a calculated value that estimates how much blood your kidneys filter each minute. It is worked out from your serum creatinine together with your age and sex, and gives a clearer picture of kidney function than creatinine alone.

Why it is done

  • To assess kidney function and stage of kidney disease.
  • To follow kidney health over time in diabetes or high blood pressure.
  • To help doctors choose or adjust some medicines.

Preparation

No special preparation is usually needed. It is calculated from a serum creatinine result.

This information is general and is not medical advice. Please speak to your doctor about your results and treatment.
