Blood Glucose (Sugar)

Measures the amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood.

About this test

This test measures glucose in your blood. It is used to screen for diabetes, to diagnose it and to check how well blood sugar is controlled. It can be done fasting, after a meal or at a random time, as your doctor advises.

Why it is done

  • To screen for or help diagnose diabetes and pre-diabetes.
  • To monitor blood sugar in people who already have diabetes.
  • To check symptoms such as excess thirst, frequent urination or tiredness.

Preparation

For a fasting sample, usually 8 to 10 hours without food (water is fine). Ask us or your doctor which type of sample is needed.

This information is general and is not medical advice. Please speak to your doctor about your results and treatment.
